As like many of you in South East Queensland, we've had to face road closures and flooding during the cyclone. During my time at home, I set-up a practice station to work on my Putting using an old deodorant box for a hole, a tee, four golf balls and two alignment sticks. See the picture below for the layout. I set-up this station in my bedroom as it's one of the few places that has carpet. I worked specifically on four to eight foot putts. This session only goes for around 15-20 mins but is extremely productive.
The first stage of setting this up was to position an alignment stick for my feet line parallel to the deodorant box (hole). This alignment stick is roughly a handspan from the ball aiming parallel left of the box. I then place another alignment stick roughly half a handspan away on the other side of the ball. I have this pointing directly at the tee on the right side of the box. This is to ensure once again that the stick is perfectly parallel. This alignment stick is to be used to ensure the clubface is aligned square each time.
I then focus on hitting my first four putts. Just before I commence the first putt, I ensure my ball position is correct. I do this by setting up to the ball and then laying my putter straight down behind the ball confirming the position. I'm aiming to have the ball position just forward of centre each time. I also ensure my shoulders are square each time by placing the putter along my shoulders to confirm. I in fact check the ball position and shoulder line every five putts.
I then ensure the putter is square by having it perpendicular to the alignment stick and then proceeding to hit my first four putts. During the stroke I'm focused on just using my shoulders and having the same length back and through. I also ensure my grip pressure is down to roughly a three (ten being the tightest). I lastly focus on tempo by having the same speed back and through. I putt a total of 16 balls during this practice session which typically takes around 15-20mins as mentioned earlier.
