How Do I Know How Many Lessons I Should Get??

When deciding to improve in golf, questions will often arise about exactly how many lessons you need to get better. The amount of lessons can vary from person to person. The biggest determiner are the goals you have for yourself. The most common goal that people tend to have is being more consistent in their striking. More specific goals can include getting ready for a corporate event or breaking 100, 90, 80 or 70.

When going for your lesson, the instructor should sit down with you and have a real idea of what your goals are. I would also try and have an idea for yourself what your ideal target would be. If you're unsure, your instructor will be able to guide you to what a realistic goal would be. Once the goal is established, the instructor will then go about making a plan for improvement and recommend the parts of your game that need attention. By the way, the goal can simply be to have fun and the instructor will organise lessons accordingly.

Now for most goals I would always recommend coming to see me at least once a week or every fortnight for six times. From there we can spread them out or cut back to 30 mins lessons rather than an hour. I would also recommend that on top of the lessons to try and go through two buckets of balls per week along with one competition game. The beauty of having lessons is that you'll be able to stay on top of your game without risk of returning back to bad habits.

Now for those who are quite serious and want to lower their score quickly and for the long term, I would recommend to continue doing weekly lessons or fortnightly lessons for the foreseeable future. When I decided to become a low handicap player and onto a professional, I made a decision to see a coach once a week for 3 years. I also though added extensive practice time and regular competition games. After three years I felt in control of my game and consequently lowered my handicap to scratch. More importantly I became an expert of my own swing.
