To Improve Your Skill, Experiment Working The Ball In Both Directions

I will often work with students about how to improve their clubface control. Sometimes they can have a very sound swing but by the time they strike the ball, the ball may veer left or right due to the clubface not being in the correct position. Also it is a great idea to work on clubface drills when trying to overcome a slice or a severe hook.

Now working on changing the clubface position is actually relatively simple. The primary focus when trying to change your shot shape is whether the clubface is rotating more left or under rotating to the right. When I first explain about changing clubface some people can get a little overwhelmed as they are not sure if they are making the desired change at the ball. The best practice is doing a rehearsal whereby if you're intention is to turn the clubface left, just do a slow practice swing where you see and feel the clubface left at impact. The same can be said when trying to hold the clubface more to the right.

Now a really good cue when controlling the clubface is where the 'toe' and 'heel' are positioned at impact. If you want to have the ball turn left, just ensure the 'toe' beats the 'heel' to the ball. Also to stop making the ball go left, just do the opposite by having the 'heel' beat the 'toe' to the ball. Now lots of people will ask what muscle groups are trying to turn the clubface? Just feel the rotation through your arms, hands and wrists.

Next time when you're at the range, dedicate some practice time working on clubface rotation. For example I will often hit 10-20 balls just working the ball left-right and right-left. I will also work on the amount I want to turn the clubface through speeding up the rotation of the clubface or slowing down the rotation. You will be surprised how good you can get just by rehearsing different impact positions. The only element that you need to make sure of when controlling the clubface, is ensuring that at the time of impact, you have your hands just in front of the clubface. This will guarantee that your strike is solid.
