Use A Wall To Feel Correct Body Movement

When I coach students, one of the biggest problem areas is the ability to be able to correctly move the body throughout the swing. The first stage of being able to achieve this, is being aware of what correct body movement looks like. This is where golf lessons become very important as you first want to lean and be shown how to achieve the correct motion. This can take a few lessons to fully understand and feel the movement but once you do, you can make real breakthroughs in your game.

Now when I talk about body movement, I focus a lot on the movement of the left hip (based on a right hander). I implement a drill where all you need to be is next to a wall. It also doesn't require a club. You simply set-up in a golf posture with your arms crossed. You then want to position yourself around two inches from the wall away from your left hip. You then want to start your swing by moving your left shoulder under your chin. Just make sure that on the backswing, the left hip doesn't move back to the left and touch the wall.

On the downswing you then want to feel the left hip move in to the wall to ensure the weight moves onto the left foot. If you can ensure this movement with the left hip, you would have correctly moved your weight throughout the swing. Now being more specific when you start your backswing, ensure that pressure doesn't move to the outside of the right foot. You want to feel the pressure start just inside the right foot and remain there to the top of your swing. If you can achieve this, you will feel your head remain relatively stable.

Also when further breaking down the downswing, when you move the left hip toward the wall, this should be the first body part that moves. You want to make sure that on the downswing, the lower half always starts first before the upper half. When you do bump the left hip toward the wall, this bump should be a lateral shift and not a turn. Once you've laterally shifted your left hip toward the wall before your upper half moves, you can then feel as though the remainder of the body is shifting through and turning.
